VOD

Related Terms: VOD
Video on Demand (VOD)

Video on Demand systems allow users to select and watch video content as part of an interactive television system. Examples of VOD would include ordering movies via your television provider, viewing training videos, and selecting music videos to watch. VOD content is not live but rather pre-encoded content available at any time from a server.

VOD systems are either "streaming", in which viewing can start as the video streams over the Internet (or other network), or "download", in which the program is brought in its entirety to a set-top box before viewing starts.

Most VOD systems contain functionality similar to VCR in that they allow a user to pause, fast forward, rewind, jump to a previous/future frame, etc.
