Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP)

Voice over Internet Protocol, also referred to as Internet telephony or IP telephony, is the transmitting of ordinary voice communication over Internet Protocol (IP) connections.

Most VOIP services require a telephone adapter (TA) to link a ordinary touch-tone telephone to the network connection. Some TAs connect directly to the broadband modem, while others connect to an Ethernet connection on a router.

The voice data flows in the form of packets over a packet-switched network, instead of the traditional dedicated, circuit-switched telephone network.

One major advantage of VOIP is that it avoids the fees charged by ordinary telephone services.
